Naruto is a mischievous young boy who, due to the "stigma" of having the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him, is shunned by the adults of Village Hidden in the Leaves, since he is the "vessel" of the demon who had killed so many people in the village twelve years ago. Before he was aware of this fact, Naruto was simply a young orphan, living alone in his house, eating his "cup ramen" (instant cup noodles), and basically getting attention to himself by being a brat. He would pull pranks, and vandalize monuments and statues. He even made fun of his ninja apprenticeship classes, inventing "stupid ninja skills" as "Sexy no Jutsu", where instead of transforming his appearance to look like his teacher, he turns in to a naked, blonde girl!
Sakura, like any other teenage girl, has only one thing in mind...boys! More specifically, one boy, Sasuke Uchiha. She tries to act all sweet, prim, and proper on the outside, but we also get to see "Inner Sakura", a "darker" (and perhaps the true) hidden version of her personality, whenever she makes certain comments.
Sasuke is one of the top scorers of the ninja apprenticeship school and the top "Genin" (rookie/first-level ninja) of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. He is the sole remaining member of the Uchiha clan, a once powerful ninja clan of the village. He is very dark and serious, and is focused on nothing else but training to become a stronger ninja.
Hatake Kakashi is the Jounin in charge of Sasuke, Sakura and Naruto. He never shows his face, always wearing the mask shown here. His left eye was destroyed in war when he was young, and due to unique circumstances, he was given the eye of his dying teammate, who happened to be from the Uchiha clan. Hence, Kakashi has a single Sharingan eye. Kakashi is also a former member of the Anbu (elite ninja assassination team), and excels in hunting down anyone and anything. He also has a special technique, Chidori, which utilizes raw chakra at high speeds and decimates the enemy with it.
Ino is a Genin and was assigned to a team with Akimichi Chouji and Nara Shikamaru. Ino likes Sasuke, which is the main reason why she is Sakura's enemy.
Rock Lee is the epitome of hard work and determination.
For many years, this youth with little to no promise continued in his training to someday become a ninja--despite the fact that no one really believed he could ever succeed. He had no skill in controlling his life force (chakra), and therefore couldn't perform even the most basic of ninja techniques. Even his hand-to-hand combat skills were below average.
Neji's team members are Tenten and Rock Lee, and his instructor is Gai sensei. Neji hates when they talk about the head family of Hyuuga being better than the branch family of Hyuuga.
Hinata is an interesting character. She's one of my favorites on the show. Hinata is very quiet, secluded, and shy. She usually avoids social events, and she has a large affection for Naruto, which is sadly, not returned. (Or is it?)
Tenten is part of a team made up by Rock Lee and Hyuuga Neji. She has an extreme talent in weapons, able to throw a kunai or shuriken without missing the target. The only time she misses if she has a break in her concentration.
Choji Akimichi is a rather large kid who has the unique ability to increase any of his body parts ten times their original size. His Team 10 and their leader is Asuma Sarutobi and his partners are Shikimaru Nara and Ino Yomanaka.
Shikamaru Nara is in Team #10, which is Asuma Sarutobi's team, along with Ino Yamanaka and Choji Akimichi. Nara can use shadow Jutsu with a limit of about five minutes. He's a good team leader and really intelligent, but everything is annoying to him!
The Third Hokage is the Hidden Leaf village chieftain. He would probably have retired as Hokage (highest ninja position) of the village twelve years ago had the Fourth Hokage not sacrificed himself in order to seal the Demon Fox. He's now quite old, and he mostly does administrative jobs like running the academy, assigning missions to the ninja teams, and other such tasks.
Orochimaru - One of the legendary Sannin, Orochimaru was trained by the Third Hokage. He then turned evil because he wanted power. Orochimaru can summon snakes and seems immortal. When he bites someone he gives the person a cursed seal that sucks chakra out of him or her. They have a 90% chance of dying after being bitten. He impersonates the Kazekage in order to destroy Konoha. Orochimaru has a personal grudge against Konoha. He is classified as an S Class Criminal. He appears from episode 28 and onward.
Gaara is about 12 years old (at the start of the series), and he enjoys killing people that stand in his way (his way of having fun). Long ago, when he was around the age of six, his father, the Kazekage, sent assassins to kill off Gaara because he believed Gaara was becoming too dangerous (after killing a man that passed him in the street). But the attempt failed, and later ninja's were sent...who were all killed by Gaara.
Jiraiya-sama is known as the Ero-Sennin by Naruto. Jiraiya is the creator of Love Love Paradise (also known as Come Come paradise), the book that Kakashi is always reading.
Kiba is a Genin competing with along with Naruto and the other Genins. His dog, Akamaru, is his best friend, as well as being very useful in battle.
Shino is a very mysterious character of this anime. Because he's a member of the Aburame Clan, his special skill is that he has insects in his body that feed of his chakara. He then utilizes these insects for attacking and defending. Some of his abilities is Bug Host and Bug Clone. These bugs obey whatever he orders them to do. These bugs are really harmful because they eat chakra.
Asuma Sarutobi is the sensei of team 10, which consists of Choji Akimichi, Shikamaru Nara, and Ino Yamanaka. He always has a cigarette in his mouth.
Ayame is one of the smaller, secondary characters of Naruto. She works at the Ichigaku ramen shop with her father (the owner, Teuchi). She is on pretty friendly terms with the ninja of the village.
Deidara is one of the members of Akatsuki we see in the later manga. Although Deidara has a feminine appearance, he is definitely male, and his voice is more masculine and low in the anime. Deidara is first seen in the anime as a mysterious figure before the 3 year time skip. In the manga, we see a more clear version when he and his partner, Sasori, or Sasori-danna (Master Sasori), head to the village Hidden in the Sand (Sunagakure) to capture Gaara.
Dosu and his teammates Zaku Abumi, and Kin Tsuchi are all followers of Orochimaru. The three of them are all genin from Oto no Kuni (Land of Sound). They have come with no intention of getting scrolls, or even passing the Chunin exam... they have come for Sasuke!
Genma has to take over as a Chuunin Examiner after his friend Gekkou Hayate dies.
Haku is a shinobi with a kind heart. His past was a gruesome history. Advanced bloodlines were feared during his childhood and civil wars erupted because of the bloodlines. Both Haku and his mother were part of an advanced bloodline. Haku's father, however, was among most others in the village, a normal blood. After discovering Haku and his mother's bloodline secret, Haku's father had his mother killed.
Hayate Gekkou is a jounin who judges the preliminaries right before the 3rd round on the chunin exams. He has a constant cough and a somewhat sickly look about him (kind of like Hyatt from Excel Saga), said to be caused by a childhood illness. Though these things make him appear weak, he is actually a very skilled ninja, who can perform a technique with his sword called "Dance of the Cresent Moon".
The first Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village is extremely strong. Shodai, and his brother Nidaime (the 2nd Hokage) trained the current Hokage, Sarutobi (the 3rd) to what he is today... though they both died early in their leadership leaving Sarutobi to train himself.
One of the members of the Akatsuki group, Kisame is a deadly terrorist trained for evil purposes. Partners with Uchiha Itachi, he remains loyal as a teammate with him. Known as the Daimyo Killer, he was formerly a hidden mist shinobi. Water tribes were constantly searching for this shinobi after he terrorized them
Iruka-sensei is a "Chuunin" (middle-level ninja) who was the apprenticeship instructor of the ninja "cadets" at the village Academy. He and Naruto share the same past, as both of them were neglected by people as they were growing up. Iruka lost his parents to the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox twelve years ago, and after that no one took care of him. Unlike most of the villagers, though, Iruka acknowledges Naruto's existence and accepts him, even though within Naruto is the Demon Fox who killed his parents.
Might Gai is the arch rival of Kakashi Hatake, leader of squad seven. The two of them compete in all sorts of different events to prove who is the better ninja. Some of their competitions include 100 meter dashes, wrestling, eating contests, and rock paper scissors. They keep score, and Gai has a record of 50 wins and 49 losses. (And to top that, Gai is faster and probably stronger than Kakashi.)
Itachi is Sasuke's older brother and these two are the only ones left in the Uchiha clan. The entire clan was murdered by Itachi about four years ago. Itachi seemed to hold a grudge against his clan and the only reason he gave for his crime was he wanted to test his strength.
Kabuto is one of Orochimaru's followers. He is a spy but he doesn't want to expose his cover, that's why he purposely failed the Chuunin examination six times! But even though he is good at hiding, all the sensei know his secret.
Kankuro hailing from the Village Hidden in the Sand, along with his team mates and siblings, Gaara of the Desert and Temari. Together, they all participate in the Chuuin Exam.
Kimimaro is the last of the Kaguya clan, a group of ninja said to be extremely bloodthirsty and war-loving. Even then, Kimimaro was born so unnaturally strong that he was locked away in a cell for much of his young life by his own people. When the less-than-sane clan decided to attack Hidden Mist village, Kimimaro was finally let out of his cage and given a purpose... to kill those of Mist. But the need to destroy wasn't enough to ensure victory for this clan of ninjas, and they were completely wiped out, all but Kimimaro.
Kin Tsuchi is Zaku and Dosu's team mate. Ino took over Kin's body to see if the other two would give up.
Konohamaru is the Grandson of the Third Hokage. He calls his teacher, Ebisu, glasses-teacher, and he looks up to Naruto because Naruto punched him, not caring that he was the Hokage's grandson.
Yuuhi Kurenai is a rookie Jounin of Konohagakure. Her squad, also known as Team 8, consists of Hyuuga Hinata, Inuzuka Kiba and Aburame Shino. She specialises in both tracking and Genjutsu. She graduated from the Ninja Academy at the age of 9, and became a Chuunin at age 13. She tends to favour Hinata over the rest of her team, because of how her father sees her as.
Kyuubi is a demon fox. Where he came from no one knows. He came to the Leaf Village 12 years ago and destroyed most of it. His tail could cause earthquakes and tsunami's. His chakara ("chakra" in the English version) is everlasting and very powerful. It was when the 4th Hokage sealed the Demon Fox inside a young boy as a vessel and thus died. This boy is Naruto Uzumaki who contains the demon fox, though he doesn't realize it.
The Second Hokage is the younger brother of the First Hokage, Shodai. He, along with his brother, founded the Hidden Leaf Village. After Shodai stepped down from being Hokage, Nidaime became the next Hokage. He has very powerful water jutsus (even when there was no water). Some of his attacks include Water Dragon Blast Skill, Water Formation Wall, and Water Wave. He was Sarutobi (3rd Hokage's) main teacher.
Shizune is Tsunade's student/right hand-woman. No one really knows how she met up with Tsunade, but it is rumored that Shizune had left Konoha when her uncle Dan (also Tsunade's lover) was killed. They say she was an errand girl when she found Tsunade drunk in a bar. Since then Tsunade and Shizune have wandered around.
Shukaku is a giant sand tanuki (which is a dog-raccoon type creature common in Japan) who has been sealed into a boy when the boy was born. This boy is Gaara of the Sand. His other container was a high priest. If you contain Shukaku, you cannot sleep or it will take over.
Tazuna lives in the Land of Waves (also known as the Village Hidden in the Mist). He has a daughter, and a grandson named Inari. One day he's in the Village Hidden in the Leaves, and he was ranked a C mission because he said he only needs protection from thieves. He's suprised when he sees who is guarding him, and calling them snot-nosed brats. (Naruto wanted to hurt him).
Temari is the oldest child out of her siblings, Kankuro and Gaara of the Desert. She can be very arrogant and over-confident of her abilities, though she does have some very strong attacks.
Tsunade, or Granny Tsunade as Naruto would call her, is one of the three legendary Sannins that was trained under the 3rd Hokage, also known as Sarutobi, along with Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Unlike Orochimaru and Jiraiya, she has incredible super-human strength and a bad temper to go along with it. Tsunade also happens to be the grand daughter of the 1st Hokage. She is a spontaneous person who loves to gamble, even though she is horrible at it and always ends up losing.
The Fourth Hokage was the one who sealed the spirit of the Nine Tailed Fox inside of Naruto. In sealing the demon he gave his life and the Third Hokage came out of retirement to take his place. His real name has yet to be mentioned in either the Anime or the Manga, but it is seen written in Japanese on the summoning contract that Naruto signs to call forth Gamabunta.
Zabuza is an extremely dangerous man who seeks out to kill all in his way. He fought Kakashi and almost killed him... while almost killing himself.
Zaku is a Sound Ninja Genin who Naruto encounters during the Chunin exams. Though he is gifted, Zaku doesn't seem to have a lot of luck in finding opponents. His battle with Sasuke during the second part of the exam lands him with two broken arms and a hurt ego. His second battle, with Shino, ends with his own arm being severed due to Shino's beetles.
Enma (The Monkey King) was taken from Chinese Lore, pronounced (Sun Wu Kong) in Chinese. He is summoned by the Third and fights Orochimaru with him.
Nibi is a 2-tailed cat with fire breathing powers. Nibi's Jinchuuriki is a girl named Yugito from the Village of Cloud. She is the second strongest ninja in her village and she has the ability to transform completely into the two tailed demon cat almost at will. The demon cat can shoot fireballs from her mouth at her opponent. Yugito seems to be like what Gaara was to the Sand Village, the trump card of the Hidden Cloud. Unlike Gaara and Naruto, she doesn't seem to have problem with people around her. This hints that the demon in her isn't hated by everyone and she is viewed by others how the Hokage wants everyone to view Naruto. Yugito gets captured by the Akatsuki, just like Gaara, so they can extract the Bijuu out of her.
Sanbi the three-tailed beast is a gigantic, turtle-like demon. The abilities of this creature, at the moment, are unknown. Sanbi is extremely large and also has great speed. What makes the Sanbi unique from the other demons, is that it does not have a host and it doesn't seem to have any sign of intelligence. According to Deidara of Akatsuki, not having a host makes it weaker because it isn't intelligent enough to control its own strength.
Yonbi, other than the fact that this demon has four tails, nothing much else is known, not even what animal it is. The host of this demon was an elderly man. He can be recognized by dark marks under his eyes, most likely from the demon. This man uses many elemental fusion techniques when battling, which could be some of the powers from the demon. This 4-tailed creature was captured by the Akatsuki after Kisame killed its host.
Houkou was a canine spirit in traditional Japanese folklore, with 5 long tails and a white coloured body. It lived inside a tree and was spiritually connected to it. Each of the tails possessed one of the five elemental powers, that used simultaneously could cause an earthquake. Houkou was also known for creating illusions to scare away trespassers or those who would harm its tree. Houkou is similar in many aspects to the Inugami
Raiju ("thunder animal") is a demon from Japanese mythology. Its body is composed of either lightning or fire and may be in the shape of a cat, tanuki, monkey, or weasel. It may also fly about as a ball of lightning or fire (in fact, the demon may be an attempt to explain the phenomenon of ball lightning). Its cry sounds like thunder. The six tailed demon.
Eight Tails: Demon type and Jinchūriki unknown (possibly a Hachimata).
Rumored in the fandom to be inhabiting Orochimaru.

Crow has gone through a whole lot through its years of combat, starting with its creation of Sasori. For years it and Sasori fought together until, Sasori longer had use for it, Crow was useless, a thing of the past, an old toy. And years of sitting, waiting in the dust, Crow was taken up for battle once again by Kankuro, the Kazekage's son. Crow fought valiantly with Kankuro, well, if he had a personality. Kankuro grew close to Crow, adding new traps to it whenever he could, they went through many battles, until one that would be its demise.
